I will Contest Ekiti Governorship, Bamidele Insists

Reports

Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele is bent on contesting next year’s Ekiti State governorship election with incumbent Kayode Fayemi, despite the position of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) that the incumbent should contest unopposed on the platform of the party.

Addressing his supporters at his office on Saturday, Bamidele was dismissive of the party’s endorsement of the governor, saying only God’s wish would come to pass. He also defended ACN leader, Bola Tinubu in his alleged role in the governor’s endorsement, saying he was sure Tinubu, whom he served as Special Adviser for years in Lagos, would never do anything to undermine democracy.

“The Tinubu that I know will not take any step that will undermine democracy,” he said. “So, what was reported was not what Tinubu said. The Tinubu I know wants Ekiti people to take their own decision and not be imposed upon.

“I will always respect my benefactor and Senator Tinubu is my benefactor whom I respect so well. But Ekiti is first on my agenda. The Tinubu I know wants the best for Ekiti. If I could work for him for eleven and half years to make Lagos State a model, then I know he will want somebody like me to work with the people to make Ekiti a model.”

Bamidele said he was not bent on contesting the election for selfish personal agenda but rather for the interest of Ekiti people. However, he vowed never to step down.

“Nobody can stop me from contesting the governorship election,” he said. “I cannot fight with Tinubu, just like it is not compulsory that we should agree on everything at all times.”
