UNILAG Shut as Students Protest Hike in Registration Fee

Reports

Students of University of Lagos (UNILAG) Yaba, Lagos on Friday defied heavy rains, blocking the school gate as well as other major roads in the area of the state to protest against a N20,000 late registration fee for course forms imposed on them.

The students accused the management of the institution extortion for demanding such a huge amount for late registration of course forms, saying that it started with N5,000.

"When the management saw the rush with which students started registering, it quickly increased the amount to N10,000 and then to N15,000 and N20,000 within days," one of the embittered students told Huhuonline.com.

Before the protest, the students converged at the University's Senate Building where they agreed to hit the streets.

The students complained that they were tired of continuous exploitation, they chanted anti-management songs, demanding that the fees be reduced promptly.

The student held that the school management intentionally wanted to punish them by first shutting down the registration portal and later increasing the late registration fees.
