The Delta State Government has spoken against Friday’s attack on the state’s commissioner for education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare, which resulted in a hand injury that required serious medical attention.
Muoboghare was attacked by youths during a meeting of political groups in the area, and stabbed in the hand.
“On Saturday, September 6, 2013, Delta State Commissioner for Education (Basic and Secondary), Professor Patrick Muoboghare was viciously attacked by some elements among the youth at a meeting in Ughelli North Local Government Area,” Honourable Delta State Commissioner for Information, Chike Ogeah said in a media release.
“What was scheduled as a peaceful meeting among political groups in the area was hijacked by a few misguided youths that took advantage of the atmosphere of camaraderie to inflict bodily harm on Prof. Muoboghare. The commissioner was wounded from a knife attack, but thankfully, he was immediately taken to hospital where doctors attended to him.”
Expressing happiness that Muoboghare is stable, recuperating, responding to treatment and was never in coma, he criticised masterminds of the attack and urged the Police to apprehend them.
“We unreservedly condemn the unprovoked attack on the commissioner. Arrests have been made by the police and perpetrators of the crime will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.
“At a time that Delta State has emerged as one of the most peaceful states in the country, the unfortunate incident belies the perception of the youth as the successor generation among the political class that should usher an era of tolerance in politics.”
He then urged Deltans, especially youths, to “eschew violence in all their conduct, as attacks on persons under any guise is a criminal act punishable under Nigerian laws.”
